Delight in the Mountain – Italian Oregano
Oregano is the anglicized form of the Italian word origano, which is also a derivation from the Greek origanon ὀρίγανον oros ὄρος “mountain” + the verb ganousthai γανοῦσθαι “delight in”. Also known as wild marjoram and adding more confusion to the mix is the close relationship between marjoram (Origanum majorana) and oregano, which naturally means they also look very much alike.
Italian oregano is a cross between marjoram and the Greek form. Marjoram is a close relative but has a gentler, sweeter flavour. It’s widely used in Liguria to flavour savoury pies, pasta sauces and seafood dishes. Floral wreaths of this sweeter herb were very commonly worn by couples at both Greek and Roman marriages, and were taken to symbolize the joyfulness of the wedding and the happiness of the couple.
Oregano, commonly called “the pizza herb,” is one of the most widely-used herbs worldwide, so it is hard to imagine anyone not having tried it. Together with basil, it contributes much to the distinctive character of many Italian dishes. It is the perfect secret herb for all your Italian recipes.
Fresh or dried leaves flavour tomato sauce, vinegar, butter, omelettes, quiche, bread, marinated vegetables, beef, poultry, game, onions, and courgettes. It also combines nicely with pickled olives, capers, and lovage leaves. The leaves are used fresh from the plant or dried but they are more flavourful when dried
Refrigerate the fresh leaves in a plastic bag up to 3 days. Choose bright-green, fresh-looking bunches with no sign of wilting or yellowing. Crush dried oregano lightly in your hands before adding to dishes to activate its essential oils, and for the best taste add it near the end of cooking.
Herb
The o. herb is light green in colour with a strong, aromatic odour and pleasantly bitter taste. This hardly little plant is a perennial herb, growing to 20-80 cm tall, with opposite leaves 1-4 cm long. In the Philippines, it (Coleus aromaticus) is not commonly used for cooking but is rather considered as a primarily medicinal plant, useful for relieving children’s coughs
Growing
Growing oregano plants must be spaced at least thirty cm or twelve inches apart from each other for optimal growth. Plant seeds in warm soil in late spring or in pots or seed trays under glass in mid-spring. Oregano grows very slowly and the soil must be weeded on a regular basis to ensure maximum growth of the crop during the growing season. The ideal way to grow in containers is to keep the growing plant well pruned and pinched (pinching off the growing tips of the leaves) at all times during the growing process, so as to have a rounded and bushy shape which is manageable at all times. A growing pot should be about ten to twelve inches or twenty five to thirty cm wide and the ideal soil mixture must have some coarse sand with the clay.
When cultivating using seeds, you must make sure that the seeds are initially sown in the pot out of doors early during the spring season or germinated seedlings can be settled into growing containers immediately following the last frost of the year. To maintain a continuous supply of fresh leaves, the flowers must be pinched off as and when they develop.
The subspecies “Origanum vulgare” is an important culinary herb. It is these leaves that are used in cooking. Unlike most Italian herbs, oregano works with hot and spicy food, which is popular in southern Italy.
Oil
Oil of oregano is the premier natural antiseptic and it has recently been found to have extremely effective properties against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Clay Pot Crafts:- How To Make A Bell For The Porch
Clay pot crafts are a cute way to make home decorations. In clay pot crafts, clay flower pots can be crafted into a variety of decorative things that appeal to gardeners. Usually, the crafter begins with new pots. The pots are often decorated with paint as well as being tied together with rope or cord to create things.
Pots for clay pot crafts can be purchased in many different sizes, from tiny ones not more than 2 inches in diameter, to huge ones over a foot across. For a beginning project, start with smaller pots. The beginner should also choose clay pot crafts that don’t use too many pots in too elaborate a design.
An example of a good craft for someone new at clay pot crafts is to make a bell from two clay pots. Buy one pot that is about five or six inches in diameter, and another that is very small. You will use the small one as the clapper for the bell. You will also need some decorative cord, two large wooden beads, and paint in desired colors. You may also wish to purchase some glue-on jewels to decorate the bell. The bell makes a nice decoration for a front porch.
Cut the cord two feet (60 cm.) long. Fold the end over 3 inches (8 cm.) and tie in an overhand knot, making a loop. This loop is for hanging the bell from a hook or a nail. Now turn the larger clay pot upside-down. Pass the loose end of the cord down through the hole in the pot. Lay the pot on its side and slide one of the large wooden beads up the cord until it is about 10 inches (25 cm.) from the loose end. Now tie the cord around the bead so that the bead cannot slip from its position on the cord. If you have done this correctly, you can lift the pot by the loop. In clay pot crafts, the beads must be large enough to stop the cord from going through the hole in the bottom of the pot.
On the loose end of the cord, you are going to attach the small pot in the same way. Slide the small pot up the cord to make it easier to tie the other large wooden bead on the end of the cord. Now when you lift the entire arrangement by the loop, the smaller pot should hang freely inside the larger pot, making a pleasant sound when it claps against the larger pot.
Decorate the outside of the larger pot with paint as desired. You may like to paint it in black and white patches for a Holstein cow theme. You may a 1000 lso like to decorate the top of the bell with silk or dried flowers and greenery and a ribbon bow.
For a variation on this craft, make three of the bells and hang them from a horizontal piece of driftwood or other interesting piece of natural wood. When making hanging clay pot crafts, always make sure the beads are large enough and are tied tightly in place, because the clay pots will break if they fall to the ground.
Other clay pot crafts include making a large doll or scarecrow of nested pots strung together and painted. The doll can sit on a chair or a step of the front porch. Majority of the gardeners have their preferences when it comes to the choice of plastic or clay pots for plants. Probably it is because of the advantages as well disadvantages of both these types. The unglazed clay (terra-cotta) pots are made up of specific soil, which are then fired in kilns on the manufacturing process. The color of clay, which is rusty brown, is harmonious with the foliage and flower colors.
Clay pots give the plants a healthy environment. The clay porosity allows the moisture and air to penetrate sides of the pot. This air and moisture is utilized through the fine roots situated at the soil ball’s edge. Moreover, the clay pots act like a wick, which removes the excess moisture from the watering habits. Gardeners who have a heavy hand at watering plants may over-water; maybe their plants will benefit from the clay. Some gardeners waiting for the wilting signal from plants are better with plastic. Clay pots are also preferred by plants that demand a dry and well-drained soil such as cacti.
Using clay pots outdoors has also advantages. Pots made of clay have thick walls, which protect the roots of the plants from the quick changes in the temperature, which has the capability to destroy plants. They have also good amount of weight, which make them not easy to blow over. Clay may also form a crusty layer on the pots’ outside part. Some gardeners may find the layer attractive but most may find it unattractive. An ultimate disadvantage of the clay pots is that they are easy to break.
On the other hand, the plastic plants pots are flexible, strong and lightweight. They come in various colors so as to coordinate with the exterior and interior dcor. Unlike the clay pots, plastic pots do not have wicking action, which make them an ideal choice for gardeners who infrequently water their plants or for those moisture-loving plants.
Pots made of plastic are composed of inert materials and they are considered ideal pots for growing plants. Majority of these pots are made up of a recycle plastic, thus disposal, when the pot is not longer usable, is an environmentally friendly. Generally, plastic pots have thinner walls compared to the clay pots, which offer roots little insulation from the change of temperature. Black plastic can serve as a solar collector, which heats up the potting medium to the damaging levels of the plants.
If the plants in the dark-colored plastic pots quickly wilt, then check to ensure that the plants are getting sufficient water, and then move them to a shady place where build-up of heat is not a problem. Lots of plastic pots meant for outdoor use are handled with inhibitors of ultraviolet light to maintain flexibility as well as to reduce fading, thus increasing the pot’s lifespan. Just remember, whether it be clay or a plastic pot, make sure that the pot you choose has drainage holes beneath to avoid over-watering.

Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia writing songs by the time she was a teenager. By the mid-90s, Missy established herself as one of the most sought after producers and arrangers of hip hop music, eventually leading to her own solo music career.
